Introduced in 2009, the STEP Foundation Certificate on Trusts for Civil Law Practitioners is a specialist qualification in trusts aimed at practitioners in South American civil law jurisdictions.
The programme provides a detailed insight into trusts and their administration from both a South American and international perspective.

The syllabus consists of the following modules:
- Introduction to International Financial Centres
- Evolution of Equity and the Law of Trusts
- The Fundamentals of a Valid Trust
- Types of Trust
- Modern uses of Trusts
- Basic Trust Administration
- The Role and Status of the International Asset Holding Company
- Incorporation, Funding and Dissolution of Companies
- Company Shareholders, Directors and Other Officers
- International Corporate Services
The Certificate is introductory in nature and is designed to provide you with an understanding of key trust principles.

Entry Advice
The Certificate is an open entry programme. There are no formal educational entry requirements. However, applicants should have a good standard of basic literacy. The course materials, face-to-face tuition and examination are all in English.
Programme delivery
The programme is delivered through distance learning and face-to-face tuition. At the end of the five-month distance learning component, you will attend a four day face-to-face component during which the tutor will revise the main topics covered on the course and provide an overview of trusts in a South American context. This will culminate in a final examination on day five.
The tutor for the course is an international trusts specialist with over 24 years’ experience in the trusts field.

Duration of the programme
The Certificate will take five months to complete. During the distance learning period, you should aim to spend six hours per week studying the course materials.
Assessment
You must successfully complete a three-hour closed-book examination. The pass mark is 50%.
On successful completion of the programme you will be awarded the STEP Foundation Certificate on Trusts for Civil Law Practitioners.

The course fee for this Certificate is $2,950. This fee includes:

- STEP student membership subscription
STEP membership
When you enrol on the Foundation Certificate you will be eligible for student membership of STEP. Student membership entitles you to an array of benefits including:
- Attendance at branch, national and international meetings (subject to the payment of the appropriate fee, if applicable, normally reduced for members)
- Receipt of the STEP Directory and Yearbook
- Receipt of the STEP Journal, Trust Quarterly Review and Regional Supplements.
Once you have completed the course you can apply to become an Affiliate of STEP. Affiliates of STEP receive all the benefits associated with Full STEP membership, other than the right to use the TEP designation, vote at general or branch meetings or stand for election at Council.
You also have the option of going on to study the STEP Diploma in International Trust Management, which leads to Full STEP membership.
