Foundation Certificate
Exemption from the Foundation Certificate stage of the programme is possible where the applicant has either obtained a prior qualification that covers much the same ground as the Foundation Certificate, at roughly the same level, or where the applicant has obtained a degree level qualification. Where the degree or similar qualification is not cognate and no or limited experience of the profession has been gained, the individual concerned will be strongly advised to sit the Foundation Certificate.
Diploma
Applications for exemption from the Diploma papers will be considered in cases where there is a very close correlation between a previously obtained qualification and the Diploma paper from which exemption is sought, both in content and in level. STEP may take into consideration a significant amount of post-qualification experience, when coupled with a relevant professional qualification.
There will be a maximum of two possible exemptions from the four Diploma papers.
There will be a greater onus on applicants to demonstrate similarity and relevance where the qualification was obtained more than three years ago.
Each application will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Applying for ExemptionFoundation Certificate - you will need to complete EAF1, and return to CLT with verification that the relevant prior qualification has been obtained.
Diploma - as well as EA1, you will need to complete EA2 a, b, c or d, depending from which Diploma paper you are claiming exemption (guidance on completing these forms is below). Verification that the relevant qualification has been obtained will be required, as well as the syllabus for each prior qualification used as the basis for the exemption claim. Details of relevant post-qualification experience should be submitted on a separate document, countersigned by a departmental head or other suitable senior colleague.
